Chelsea will reportedly look to sign 22-year-old English striker Liam Delap from relegation-threatened Premier League club Ipswich Town in a deal worth £50 million.
According to a report by Graeme Bailey on TBR Football, Liam Delap is the subject of interest from Chelsea. The Blues are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window and have set their sights on the Ipswich Town centre-forward. They are ready to cough up £50 million to sign the English attacker from the relegation-threatened Premier League club.
Liam Delap and his Premier League breakout
Liam Delap has established himself as one of the best young prospects in the Premier League since joining Ipswich Town from Manchester City in a deal worth £20 million last summer. The Englishman spent most of his formative years with Derby County before graduating from the youth division at Manchester City.
However, the 22-year-old could not establish a foothold in the first-team squad at Manchester City and departed from the Etihad after a few loan spells in the lower leagues. Delap has been a rare bright spot for Ipswich Town this season, amassing ten goals and two assists in 27 Premier League appearances this term.
Meanwhile, Delap’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe. Premier League bigwigs, in particular, are keen on signing the Ipswich Town striker, with Chelsea among the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
London calling?
Chelsea’s interest in Liam Delap is understandable. The Blues are scouring the market for a striker heading into the summer transfer window after failing to land Victor Osimhen last year. While Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu have been impressive this season, Enzo Maresca wants more firepower from the offensive unit.
So, Delap has emerged as a viable target for Chelsea, with the West London club ready to fork out £50 million to sign him from Ipswich Town in the summer transfer window. However, it is unclear if the relegation-threatened Premier League club will accept the sum for the Englishman’s departure.
The Tractor Boys expect to sell Delap in the summer transfer window even if they avoid relegation from the Premier League. Meanwhile, Manchester City could have re-signed the 22-year-old English striker for around £40 million but will not exercise the buyback clause.
