Liverpool’s quest for European glory came to an end on Tuesday evening as they were knocked out by PSG.
Losing 1-0 on the night, Darwin Nunez’s missed penalty would ultimately be costly for the Reds as they lost 4-1 on penalties.
Clearly heartbroken with the manner of the defeat, Liverpool fans were then left annoyed after Achraf Hakimi waved around a PSG flag on the pitch.
Speaking post-match, Luis Enrique actually praised Anfield’s atmosphere, describing it as a ‘special’ stadium – not everyone, however, agrees with the Spanish boss.

Wayne Rooney and Ian Wright disappointed with Anfield crowd vs PSG
Anfield has had many famous European nights, sadly for Liverpool fans though, Tuesday evening wasn’t another one of those nights.
Wayne Rooney attended the game as part of Amazon Prime’s match coverage and the Manchester United legend has since given his verdict on Anfield’s atmosphere on the night.
Speaking on the ‘Rest Is Football’ podcast, Rooney, alongside Ian Wright and Gary Neville – revealed he wasn’t impressed by the Liverpool crowd.
Wright began the conversation by saying: “What do you think about the atmosphere? I thought it was one of those ones, even when the opposing team at Liverpool do well, they start and crank it up. I didn’t think the atmosphere wasn’t great,” said Wright.

“People know a lot more about Liverpool than me, but there is a suggestion from some of the hardcore fans that the atmosphere has softened a little bit with different types of fans coming and obviously the grounds got bigger. Carra would know more about that than me,” Neville added.
Rooney would then agree with his fellow pundits, claiming: “I thought it would be better. That was my first European game at Anfield and I thought it would have been a lot better.”
Jamie Carragher’s thoughts on Anfield atmosphere
Rooney and co aren’t the only pundits to highlight the Anfield crowd, with Liverpool’s very own Jamie Carragher honing on the debate back in October 2024.
Appearing on the ‘Overlap Fan Febate’, a Nottingham Forest supporter would question Carragher on whether Liverpool’s famous atmosphere is a ‘myth’.
“You know what, it’s been a real topic this season, the atmosphere. You think, you’ve got a new manager, is it the thing of like ‘Klopp’s gone, maybe the football’s slightly different’, because we’re all sort of thinking that the atmosphere hasn’t been great at Anfield this season.
“If I’m being totally honest, the thing of the Anfield atmospheres was always built on European games. I think normal Saturday 3 o’clock games, like most fans you sit there and wait for something to lift you rather than you lift the team, but I agree,” Carragher said.
With no more European nights to come until next season, Liverpool fans can now spur their team on in the final stages of the Premier League campaign and prove their doubters wrong.
