Nothing that transpired against the Houston Rockets on Wednesday night was surprising. Except, perhaps, for Phoenix Suns’ center Mason Plumlee deciding to go chest-to-chest with Steven Adams, an act of bravery (or folly) that no one had on their bingo card.
Beyond that anomaly, the night unfolded exactly as expected. Houston, a team that thrives on defensive intensity, set the terms of engagement, and the Suns obligingly played into their hands.
17 careless turnovers fueled the Rockets’ relentless energy, and with Phoenix missing size in the paint, the league’s top rebounding team feasted without resistance. The Suns’ defense shreds as effortlessly as a Julienne salad. And at this point, it’s not even funny anymore. It’s just sad. There’s no resistance, no structure, just a never-ending parade of opposing scorers waltzing to the rim, drilling open threes, and feasting in the midrange. They don’t just allow teams to score at will; they roll out the red carpet and hand them a personalized gift basket for their troubles.
The effort is inconsistent, the execution is nonexistent, and the results are all too predictable. If defense wins championships, the Suns are out here trying to rewrite the script. Unfortunately, it’s reading more like a tragedy than a success story.
We’ve entered the stretch of the season where engagement drifts, especially when you are watching the team that can’t win games. You watch, but your mind wanders. One eye stays on the game, the other scans for distractions. You remain tethered to the action—not out of hope, but out of habit. It’s the Hotel California stage of the season. You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.
PS...this is the best version of that song...
