Jonathan David scored his ninth and final goal in the Champions League this season on Wednesday night as Lille exited the competition to Borussia Dortmund.
Combining the qualifying rounds, league phase and knockout stages, only England's Harry Kane, Serhou Guirassy (both 10 goals) and Raphinha (11 goals) have scored more than the nine goals David managed. That is the same as Robert Lewandowski has and one more than Erling Haaland.
The last of those came five minutes into the second leg of Lille's last-16 tie - as the Canadian fired a first-time finish through the legs of Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. That goal gave the hosts a 2-1 lead on aggregate after last week's draw in Germany, but it did not last.
Dortmund equalised after Thomas Meunier felled Guirassy after a lovely Julian Brandt flick inside the penalty area, with Emre Can converting the resulting spot-kick. Ten minutes later, Maximilian Beier completed a comeback after firing off a fabulous finish following some combination play between Guirassy and Julian Ryerson.
That will almost certainly be David's last Champions League match for Lille, with the Canada international due to become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of this season. football.london understands there is an expectation the striker will receive plenty of offers from clubs in the summer.
Arsenal are one of several Premier League teams credited with an interest in David, alongside Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United. EXWHUEmployee claimed on the March 11 episode of The West Ham Way Podcast that the player's agent was in attendance at the London Stadium on Monday night for their match with Newcastle United as the club attempted to woo his team of representatives.
The striker is an Axia Sports Management client, which Nick Mavromaras founded and has Apostolos Bakalis as a partner alongside agent Mike Miller. The former also shared a video to his Instagram story on Wednesday evening showing the scenes inside the Stade Pierre Mauroy after David scored.
