Everton will reportedly look to sign 27-year-old English midfielder Sean Longstaff from Newcastle United in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by talkSPORT, Sean Longstaff is the subject of interest from Everton. The Toffees are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window. So, Newcastle United’s homegrown star has emerged as a target for the Merseyside outfit.
Sean Longstaff and his career so far
Sean Longstaff has established himself as one of the most dependable performers at Newcastle United since breaking into the first-team squad at St. James’ Park. A native of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Englishman began his youth career at North Shields Juniors but spent most of his formative years with Newcastle United after joining the Tyneside outfit in 2003.
Longstaff was a late bloomer and did not make his first-team bow for Newcastle United as a teenager. However, the 27-year-old has not looked back since his debut against Nottingham Forest nearly seven years ago, even though he has not been an undisputed first-choice starter for the Magpies throughout his stint with the senior squad.
The English midfielder has turned out over 200 times thus far for Newcastle United while chipping in with 16 goals and 11 assists. Meanwhile, Longstaff’s progress has not gone unnoticed, and he has piqued the attention of several Premier League clubs in the last few years. Everton will be one of the prospective suitors vying for his signature heading into the summer transfer window.
Move across the Premier League on the cards?
Everton’s interest in Sean Longstaff is understandable. The Toffees are scouring the market for a midfielder heading into the summer transfer window amid Idrissa Gueye’s advancing years. In addition, Abdoulaye Doucoure faces an uncertain future at Everton after entering the final few months of his contract with the Merseyside club.
So, several candidates, including Christian Norgaard, have emerged on Everton’s radar, with Longstaff also a viable target for the Merseyside club. While the 27-year-old Englishman is a critical member of Eddie Howe’s squad, selling him will help Newcastle United register a “pure profit” under the Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Reports in the last 12 months have suggested that Eddie Howe wants Newcastle United to tie Longstaff to a new contract. So, it will be interesting to see if the Magpies accept a bid from Everton for the English midfielder or extend his stay at St. James’ Park.
