Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has joked about telling Reds co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe to f*** off while praising their excellent working relationship at Old Trafford.

Amorim, 40, has endured a challenging start to life in the UK. The Portuguese arrived at M16 from Sporting CP in November last year and was hailed as one of Europe's most promising young managers.

However, four months after replacing Erik ten Hag in their dugout, Amorim has struggled to make a significant impact. Despite securing impressive victories against Manchester City and Arsenal during his tenure, United are languishing in 15th place in the Premier League table.

The Reds now risk missing out on European football unless they secure victory in the Europa League this season. Amorim's men will take on Real Sociedad in their crucial last-16 second leg clash on Thursday evening.

And despite United's ongoing struggles under Amorim, the 40-year-old appears to have a good relationship with the club's ownership. When asked by TNT Sports when he last told Ratcliffe to f*** off, he laughed before replying, "No comment."

He added: "I think we have a really good connection. We are both a little bit blunt and honest in conversations. He really likes the club, he's like a fan."

During his own media sit-down this week, British billionaire and Ineos founder, Ratcliffe, said: "I really, really like Ruben. He's a very thoughtful guy. Every time I go to the training ground, I speak to Ruben. I sit down and have a cup of coffee with him and tell him where it's going wrong, and he tells me to f**k off! I like him."

Amorim went on: "I know that he's doing really difficult things, but I feel that we have a good connection, and we want to succeed here. I already knew [about his support]. Backdoors we talk a lot, and we talk about football, not just the club. It's a good thing because publicly, it's a different thing - it shows a lot of confidence from the owner.

"I felt it since day one. Since day one, I felt that the people really like my work.

"Sometimes it's harder for me because I'm doing the work. My work is the result, so also sometimes it's harder for me, my relationship with them, than theirs with me. We're really honest with each other. I'm a little bit the same. I came from a normal family and now I'm here in Manchester and I'm still the same person. I feel that he is the same [type of] person, so we can talk like that."
