United's Moorhouse one of three new faces in U21 squad

Republic of Ireland Under-21 head coach Jim Crawford has named three debutants in his squad for two international friendlies against Scotland and Hungary this month.

Manchester United's Jack Moorhouse, Lincoln City's Joe Gardner and Brentford's Conor McManus have all been named in the 23-man squad and are in line to earn their first international caps.

Central midfielder Moorhouse has been named on the bench for the Manchester United senior team on several ocassions in recent times, having reportedly impressed manager Ruben Amorim.

St Patrick's Athletic’s Mason Melia and Crystal Palace’s Franco Umeh return to the squad having missed November’s games with Sweden due to injury.

Ronan Maher who is on loan at Tamworth from Walsall is also included in his first Under-21 squad, having come up from the Under-19s.

Ireland take on Scotland in a Friday evening clash at the Pinatar Arena in Spain on 21 March, before they then face Hungary at the same venue three days later.

Crawford is using the double-header to assess the strength of his squad ahead of the Under-21 Euro qualifiers in September.

Meanwhile, he has confirmed his coaching staff line-up with assistant coaches Paul McShane and Stephen Rice as well as goalkeeping coach Rene Gilmartin all returning for the upcoming campaign.
