Ryan Poles and Ben Johnson met with the media on Wednesday for the first time since February. It was the start of the new league year, and they had much to discuss. Most of it centered around the three massive moves they made to upgrade the interior offensive line. It started with the trade for right guard Jonah Jackson from Los Angeles, followed by left guard Joe Thuney from Kansas City. The final piece came 48 hours earlier when the team reached an agreement with free agent center Drew Dalman.
The intent was obvious. After giving up 68 sacks last season and having the 25th-ranked rushing attack, the Bears had to get stronger up front. Johnson took the opportunity to explain their strategy during the presser. He was asked what he looks for in offensive linemen. He listed four criteria he tends to prefer.
Tough
Gritty
Dirty
Smart
It was straightforward and easy to understand. Yet that wasn’t the best part. Some eagle-eyed Bears fans noticed Poles’ reaction to the explanation, and it was positively priceless.

It shouldn’t be surprising. Don’t forget the Bears GM was an offensive lineman during his playing days at Boston College. He understands the mentality of great blockers more than most. The fact his new head coach seeks those exact traits is a welcome sign that the organization is in good hands. Jackson, Thuney, and Dalman all showcase these traits. They’re good run-blockers who rarely make mistakes when faced with blitzes or stunts in pass protection. Johnson knows his offense can be complex, particularly up front. He needs blockers who can handle the mental workload. Ryan Poles made sure to get them. It appears their partnership is off to a great start. The next step will come in the NFL draft next month.
