Nottingham Forest man seen as smart transfer target – Effort depends on survival

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi would ‘make sense’ as a transfer target for former club Union Berlin this summer.

That’s [according to Berlin Live](https://www.berlin-live.de/sport/union-berlin/union-berlin-ex-stuermer-awoniyi-rueckkehr-klassenerhalt-id395964.html), who say there would be plenty of logic to the German club moving for the Nottingham Forest man in the coming months.

They explain that Union Berlin are already planning their squad for next season and both manager Steffen Baumgart and general manager Horst Heldt have Awoniyi in mind.

The belief is that a move for the striker would be interesting for them from a sporting perspective as he would provide them with the striker they’ve lacked since he departed. They already spent to sign Marin Ljubicic in January, but he can move to the wing to accommodate Awoniyi.

It would also make sense for Awoniyi as he would be a regular once again, which he isn’t at Nottingham Forest, and return to the Bundesliga, where he managed 21 goals and three assists in 64 games for Union Berlin and FSV Mainz.

It has been reported that he ‘longs to return’ to the German top flight and Union Berlin could offer him that.

The big question is whether they could afford it as his current deal with Nottingham Forest runs until 2027. There’s no immediate pressure to sell for them.

Staying in the Bundesliga could be crucial as there would be ‘significantly more money’ for the German side to spend and lure Awoniyi away from Nottingham Forest.

The belief is that there are plenty of positives to the move, though, particularly as it would let him ‘rekindle his fond memories’ from his first spell at the club.
