Contra Costa County Health Officer Dr. Ori Tzvieli will be doing double duty for the immediate future.
The county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday appointed Tzvieli as interim CEO and director of health services while it looks for a permanent replacement for Anna Roth, who retired in February after 32 years with the county. Roth has moved on to serve as president and CEO of Tahoe Forest Health System.
Supervisors said in a statement that appointing Tzvieli ensures continuity in the Contra Costa Health department and continued progress on important health initiatives. He will continue to serve as the county’s health officer.
“Anna has been a transformative leader for Contra Costa Health, and while we will deeply miss her visionary leadership, we are confident in and excited about Ori’s expertise and dedication to continue the county’s mission,” said board chair Supervisor Candace Andersen. “This transition marks an important moment for the county, and we are committed to supporting a seamless leadership change while continuing to prioritize the well-being of our residents.”

Tzvieli joined CCH in 2000 as a family medicine resident at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. He has served as medical staff president, ambulatory care medical director and, most recently, public health director and health officer.
Tzvieli received a medical degree from UC San Francisco and a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley School of Public Health.
Supervisors said in a statement that Tzvieli led collaborative efforts in addressing opioid addiction and helped lead Contra Costa’s COVID-19 response by overseeing vaccination, testing, contact tracing and case investigation, among other aspects.
The board plans to conduct an open recruitment process to fill the position permanently.
