Red Wine Isn’t Any Healthier Than White Wine—With Two Possible Exceptions

Cabernet or Chardonnay?  For years, red wine has been touted as a healthier choice, but a new study may have you putting the cork back in the bottle.

It’s commonly believed that red wine protects against cancer because it’s high in  resveratrol -- an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties.

To find out if the latest science backs that perception, researchers compared cancer risks associated with both red and white wine.

They analyzed 42 observational studies  involving nearly 96,000 participants and found no evidence red wine offers any health advantage.

The researchers say there was no significant difference in cancer risk between red and white wine …with two noted exceptions.

Drinking white wine was associated with a 22% increased risk of skin cancer, according to the results. And when they looked at women specifically, white wine intake was linked to a 26% higher cancer risk, while red wine had no statistically significant impact.

The authors say the reasons behind these associations remain unclear and warrant further investigation.
