The Tennessee Titans are likely a few years away from being a serious competitor in the AFC South under head coach Brian Callahan. However, first-year general manager Mike Borgonzi is not letting that stop him from swinging big in free agency this offseason.
This approach is a bit perplexing considering the quarterback and wide receiver situation that Tennessee finds itself in, but the longtime Kansas City Chiefs executive seems confident in his approach. The team kept adding pieces on Wednesday evening, as ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported that the Titans were signing veteran defensive lineman Dre'Mont Jones to a one-year, $10 million deal.
Tennessee moved on from former Pro Bowl edge rusher Harold Landry this offseason which meant that the team would need to add pieces on the defensive line to fill the void. He was one of their longest-tenured players, so his impact in the lockerroom may not be replicated immediately, but Jones provides a veteran presence for what is expected to be a relatively young defensive line group.
Jones is a six-year NFL veteran who has played for both the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks. He has 30.5 career sacks, as well as 40 tackles for loss, and has had over 4.0 sacks in every season since his rookie year.
Last season he played in all 17 games for the Seahawks and recorded 4.0 sacks and 28 tackles, including seven for a loss. He should be a pivotal piece of the Titans' defensive line rotation, which already includes studs like Jeffery Simmons, T'Vondre Sweat and Sebastian Joseph-Day.
