Eagles Sign Saquon Barkley Backup

Few offenses in league history have been the kind of dominant force that the Philadelphia Eagles have had over the last five years in the running game.

Behind one of the best offensive lines in football history, as well as a running quarterback, the Eagles have found a way to build an offensive scheme predicated on running the ball at a more efficient clip than any other organization.

It helped lead the way to their title in Super Bowl LIX.

A month after winning the Super Bowl, the Eagles kicked off free agency with two free agent signings that will only bolster the organization's run-first approach.

Philadelphia announced the re-signing of fullback/linebacker Ben VanSumeren and also signed free agent running back AJ Dillon to one-year deals. Both Dillon and VanSumeren should be able to help enhance what the Eagles do so well on the offensive side.

In the case of VanSumeren, the linebacker turned fullback will be back for another season in his dual role. And that's perfect for the coaching staff.

"Speed, athletic ability, physicality, want to, we'll see where this goes, but he shows us that on a daily basis," Head Coach Nick Sirianni said after VanSumeren appeared at fullback for the Eagles in Week 7. "On scout team and special teams, he shows us that on a daily basis.

Dillon, on the other hand, is one of the top power backs in the league today despite missing the entire 2024 season with a neck injury. Both players are coming off injuries.

Both players fill holes on the roster.

And only time will tell if these moves end up working out for the champs.
