Man United make£54.5m'bid'for Frenkie de Jong as'pole position'update emerges

Frenkie de Jong

Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong is being linked with a move to Manchester United again

There's something about Manchester United and transfer windows that spring some of the most bizarre stories linking the Red Devils with players. As always, that isn't looking likely to change this year.

United's financial struggles mean their capability in the window is set to be restricted, despite Ruben Amorim's clear desire to add a number of reinforcements to his squad.

However, despite there being a need to be smart in their recruitment this summer, United continue to be linked with some of football's big hitters. Here, The Manchester Evening brings you the latest transfer gossip from Old Trafford...

De Jong, round two

Frenkie de Jong and Manchester United. After Erik ten Hag failed to get the pair together, United are now reportedly looking to finally sign the midfielder. Uncertainty over his future at Barcelona has resulted into speculation around his future.

Spanish outlet Fichajes have claimed that United have offered around €65million (£54.5m) to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford. Unfortunately, that offer has been swiftly turned down.

MEN Sport says: "My personal opinion is that De Jong is the perfect profile for United's midfield. Casemiro and Christian Eriksen don't have the legs anymore and the pressure on Kobbie Mainoo to deliver weekly is too heavy. De Jong gets into the team almost immediately.

"However, if Barcelona have no interest in selling, are United best-served looking elsewhere? The last thing Sir Jim Ratcliffe needs is another back-and-forth transfer saga that dominates a window. There's too much on the line.

"Despite the deal being so luxurious and tempting, it would make little sense to splash so much money on him. However, if a deal could be struck, at a reasonable price, they could do so much worse."

Pole position

Now this is a deal that United should be getting stuck into. According to Football Insider, United are in pole position to sign Rosario Central defender Juan Gimenez.

The highly-talented defender, who has represented his country at Under-20 level, has impressed United scouts and is viewed as the next long-term investment under the fresh recruitment team at Old Trafford.

It comes after Caught Offside claimed the club have been monitoring the 18-year-old and is now on their radar for the summer. He would follow Chido Obi, Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro, Diego Leon and Patrick Dorgu in the drive of wonderkid signings.

MEN Sport says: "Clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City have become known for investing millions into the next generations. Whilst it may not be a popular method, it works with them either becoming first-team regulars or sold on for more than they bought them for.

"I'm not sure many United fans will know of Gimenez. No surprise, he's only played 21 times at senior level. But scouts are paid to know about players like him and if they can bring him to England, develop him and it work, it'll prove to be a good deal.

"The report says United are in pole position. I'm not entirely sure who else is interested in him but nevertheless, it could be an easy deal to get over the line."
