Barcelona heavyweight eager to sign a new contract following remarkable turnaround

Frenkie de Jong has reclaimed his starting role at Barcelona, turning his situation around after a difficult spell with injuries.

Having spent over five months out injured, the midfielder missed the start of the season under Hansi Flick and only made his comeback in October.

But his performances at the time were far from the desired level and he also suffered a fitness setback, raising questions about his future at the club, especially with his contract expiring in 2026.

However, De Jong has now regained his form in 2025 and has again become a regular starter, prompting the club to press ahead with plans to renew his contract.

As such, journalist Santi Ovalle reports that Frenkie de Jong has regained his confidence and now wants to extend his contract with Barcelona.

Since January, the 27-year-old midfielder has featured in 1,019 minutes over 17 games for the Blaugrana, covering 66% of the possible playing time – a drastic improvement compared to his situation in the first half of the campaign.

“The old Frenkie is back,” those from his entourage say.

With his confidence restored, the Dutchman has expressed his desire to renew his contract with Barcelona. Now it is up to his agent Ali Dursun and club sporting director Deco to finalise a renewal agreement.

A meeting already took place between the two parties back in February to lay down the groundwork for an extension.

Barcelona are proposing a three-year contract offer which would keep De Jong until the summer of 2029 while keeping his €18-19 million salary intact.

Flick has been a key figure behind this development, having managed to get the best out of the midfielder and never losing faith in him.

With the Netherlands international now keen on putting pen to paper on a new deal, one can expect the two parties to work out the finer details of the contract and finalise an agreement.
