“A thousand times over” – Player insists he doesn’t regret West Ham move despite better offers

Former West Ham United midfielder Valon Behrami has insisted he would join the club 1000 times over, even though, the choice was not the best from a sporting point of view.

[La Lazio Siamo Noi](https://www.lalaziosiamonoi.it/news/behrami-il-racconto-tra-lazio-genoa-e-west-ham-le-parole-dello-svizzero-221094) cover comments from the former midfielder turned commentator, who has been discussing his playing career with Radio Serie A.

Behrami retired in 2022 after a 20-year playing career that saw him start in Switzerland and play in Italy, England and Germany before bringing his playing days to an end at Brescia in Italy.

He enjoyed two separate spells in England at West Ham and Watford, first arriving in the Premier League in 2008 when he joined West Ham in a €6.3m deal from Lazio.

He ended up staying with the Hammers for the next three years, making 63 appearances in all competitions as they finished eighth in his first season, 17th in his second and were then relegated in 20th place in his final season.

It could be argued that his time in London was not the best time of his career, but he has other thoughts, insisting he would join West Ham 1,000 times over if given the choice.

“However, as far as the clubs’ choices were concerned, I was very attached to how the clubs approached,” he said.

“When they told me about Genoa, West Ham, Lazio itself that was not going through a good period, for me it was a stimulus. Understanding the history of some clubs was perhaps the most interesting experience, beyond what football gives you.

“An example is the experience at West Ham which is something I still live, because I know how the fans think, I know the story behind it, and it’s a choice I would make a thousand times over, even though at that time I was young and had other opportunities that were perhaps a little more interesting from a sporting point of view.”
