The Dallas Mavericks made headlines all across the NBA in recent months but not for the reasons anyone would have liked. The decision to trade star guard Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves throughout the league, shifting power in the Western Conference.
Many wondered why the Mavericks would trade a 25-year-old star in his prime and the reasons given didn't add up. Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison reiterated that the move was for a win-now situation.
With Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving both being in their 30s, the Mavericks' window to win remains short. But when discussing the deal, Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont seemed to completely contradict the reasons of Harrison.
"Tough decisions are never easy and part of leadership is looking at risk and looking at all the factors of a decision and being willing to act at that time and look to the long-term and not only think about the short-term or how it may be received immediately. To think about the long-term benefits and what you may achieve if given all the right considerations...so this was a decision about the future, if you look at our roster today and who we have, we feel like we positioned ourselves to be incredibly competitive against the best teams in the NBA."
"And you have you have Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, PJ Washington, Anthony Davis, and either Daniel Gafford or Dereck Lively as your starting five, that's gonna put fear into a lot of teams."
