Patriots Coach Sold Lofty Outlook To Key Free Agent Addition

The New England Patriots won’t be back in contention anytime soon, but that doesn’t mean we should stick a fork in them.

It’s all about perspective.

Patriots defensive coordinator Terrell Williams, for instance, believes the club is much closer to winning than the public might think and isn’t afraid to share that outlook with those new to New England.

“After I signed, he said he felt we were closer to being good than other people thought,” Patriots cornerback Carlton Davis said on “Patriots Unfiltered” on Thursday. “He felt like people may look at that record last year and think, ‘They have a ways to go. It doesn’t matter who they bring in.’ It can just be one, two, three players that change it — with leadership, plays on the field and timely plays… when you have better players situationally, you can be better overall.”

Williams and Davis have a previous relationship, having worked together last season with the Detroit Lions, so there’s a level of trust between them.

Davis will be relied upon to help turn his coach’s belief into a reality this season, and should have an easier time doing it after the initial wave of free agency additions.
