Craig Hope shares massive update on the future of St James' Park in wake of Old Trafford…

· March 13 2025, 19:30

Manchester United unveiled their plans to build a 100,000-seater circus tent at Old Trafford this week as Newcastle United fans wait for any kind of update from the club about their stadium plans.

A new, or at least improved stadium was one of the first things the new owners promised when they took over Newcastle United in 2021. We're over three years into the ownership and we're still not 100% sure what's happening.

We've recently had it narrowed down to a couple of options, one of which is building a new ground on the site behind St James' Park at Leazes Park, which a lot of fans are now starting to warm to after initial fierce opposition to leaving SJP.

Despite many meetings, and even more months having passed since it was announced we were at this stage, it has been practically silent from the club.

Newcastle United are closer than ever to moving forward with stadium plans

Craig Hope has now provided an 'exclusive' update on the plans via The Daily Mail and he is going out on a limb to say that the club are set to press ahead with the 65,000 capacity new stadium at St James' Park.

Going as far as to say that all plans to refurbish and expand St James' Park have now been swept aside to deliver full focus to the building of a new ground.

One key point shared in Hope's article is that the new site will not overlap St James' Park as has been heavily rumoured, therefore Newcastle can continue to use St James' Park while construction is completed on the new stadium.

Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena - an inspiration for Newcastle's new stadium?

Newcastle's new stadium is drawing inspiration from Bayern Munich's ground and Wembley

The 'bubblewrap' exterior that was rumoured recently seems to be a go for the new ground, giving it a look akin to Bayern Munich's Allianz Arena, as well as a parkland-style approach reminiscent of Wembley Way.

There are still hoops for the club to jump through, getting sign off from Downing Street and final approval from the PIF, but it looks like things are finally moving forward.

If they move quickly, they could find themselves in a race against Man United to see who can get into their new stadium the fastest. We already know we're going to win on looks, unless our architects decide to take inspiration from something more ridiculous than a circus tent.
