The Miami Dolphins have had some roster turnover at their linebacker spot. After bringing a few depth pieces back, the Dolphins went out and added a linebacker from another Florida team.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Dolphins are signing former Tampa Bay Buccaneers free-agent linebacker K.J. Britt to a one-year deal. Britt comes into Miami as one of the four inside linebackers on the roster.
A fifth-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2021, Britt joins Miami on a one-year deal to provide depth in their linebacker room. In his four seasons with the Buccaneers, Britt has had 126 tackles, four tackles for loss, and a half-sack.
Across the four years in Tampa Bay, Britt has only started 15 of the 59 games he appeared in. He was primarily a special teamer with the Buccaneers through his first three years in Tampa, playing at least 64 percent of the special team's snaps.
In 2024, Britt got a crack at the starting job on defense, starting in 11 games and playing 65 percent of the defensive snaps. His special teams' snap share drastically went down, falling to just 29 percent.
Britt lines up as a box linebacker and is mainly a coverage defender. He was the Buccaneers' starting linebacker for the first 12 weeks of the 2024 season before coming off the bench for the rest of the season.
Britt joins Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson, and Channing Tindall in the linebacker room. With the departure of Duke Riley and Anthony Walker Jr., Britt will have a chance to earn meaningful reps on defense in 2025.
The Dolphins signed Britt to a one-year deal, and the compensation will likely be minimal. Britt adds depth to the linebacker room and will compete for the starting job opposite Brooks for Miami in 2025.
