"They Will Have To Change" - Paul Merson Says Arsenal Need To Do This One Thing To Beat Real Madrid In The Champions League

Arsenal are due to play against La Liga giants Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League next month.

The Gunners drew 2-2 to PSV in the second leg of their round of 16 tie, beating them 9-3 on aggregate in what was a comfortable opponent for Mikel Arteta‘s side.

However, after Real Madrid beat City rivals Atletico on penalties, the Gunners now have to play against the reigning champions to book their place in the semi-finals.

They are one of just two English sides left in the competition as Aston Villa managed to beat Club Brugge to set up a tie with Paris Saint-Germain.

Former Arsenal winger Paul Merson, believes that Arteta will change the way that his side have to play in order to get the better of Real Madrid.

He told Sky Sports: “Arsenal and Villa have got two very, very difficult ties. I personally think they got the most difficult ties out of everybody.

“I think because Arsenal is so dominant in the Premier League, in 95% of their games, they’ve got to change the way they play, and they might have to play like Man United played last week against Arsenal, where they sit with 10 behind the ball and they play on a counter attack.

“Because I think if they open this game up like they do in the Premier League, there’s only one winner, and that’s Real Madrid. So for me, they will have to change the way they play for these two legs which will be hard because they don’t play that way.”

What are Arsenal’s chances of winning the Champions League?

Arsenal have arguably got the most difficult game in the quarter-finals as they will have to overcome a Real Madrid side with the likes of Jude Bellingham, Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr.

However, despite that, according to the latest Opta Supercomputer simulation for the Champions League, Arsenal are the third-favourites to win the competition.

Barcelona are the most likely at 20.4%, with PSG second at 19.3%. It gives the Gunners a 16.8% chance to win the Champions League, with a 30.3% chance to make the final, and a 52.8% chance beat Real and get to the semi-final.
