Captain Bruno Fernandes lauded teammate Rasmus Hojlund for his performance in Manchester United's 4-1 Europa League win over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

United cruised into the quarter-finals of the competition, setting up a tie with Lyon next month, inspired by a Fernandes hat-trick. He netted a penalties either side of half-time before wrapping up his treble in the closing stages.

After falling behind to a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty after just ten minutes, United responded from the spot after Hojlund was fouled. He looked destined to meet Fernandes' centre and score but was fouled as he made contact with the ball.

Despite his goal drought being extended to 21 matches, the Dane was excellent at the tip of United's attacking. He produced a brilliant assist for Diogo Dalot to score United's fourth goal in injury time and complete a 5-2 aggregate victory.

In the opinion of Fernandes, the goals will soon start flowing for the former Atalanta man, paying homage to his performance on his return to the starting XI.

"He is a striker and strikers are all about goals," Fernandes told TNT Sports. "He is going to be criticised by scoring or not scoring from the outside.

"But for us in the dressing room, we want Rasmus to score as many as he can. But at the same time, we need to understand every movement he does. He got the penalty for the first goal and he did a lot movements to attract people.

"For my last goal, he attracts the defender near him that gave me the space to go from the outside, so it is a lot things that he does that on the outside that probably won't get seen, but we see it.

"We can see how much he wants to work and how much he wants to score. I am sure the goals will come, and as soon as the first one comes, he is going to start getting more."
