Trade minister Cheong In-kyo said on Thursday that he plans to highlight the value of strategic cooperation with South Korea for U.S. economic security policy during his meeting with U.S. officials. The minister made the remarks upon arrival at Dulles International Airport near Washington D.C. for a two-day trip to the U.S. for talks with Trump administration officials.  Cheong told reporters that he thinks that South Korea belongs to the top-tier group of countries that the U.S. can most easily cooperate with in its economic security policy. The minister said that while discussing the strategic advantage of South Korea with the U.S. side, he plans to ask Washington to take a step beneficial to South Korea.  Cheong will reportedly meet U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and senior U.S. trade officials during the trip.

In the meetings, the minister plans to convey the government’s position on the U.S. tariff policy and focus his efforts on minimizing repercussions from the U.S. reciprocal tariffs, which will take effect on April 2.
