Former Super Bowl Champion moves up the ranks at the Nhc Sheriff’s Office

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A former Super Bowl champion from Wilmington has a new title.

Jay Ross played for the Green Bay Packers when they won the Super Bowl in 2010. On Thursday, Ross was promoted to Sergeant by the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.

“Jay Ross has long been a role model in our community, first as a standout high school athlete, then as a professional in the NFL, and now as a dedicated law enforcement officer,” Sheriff Ed McMahon said. “His leadership, integrity, and commitment to the safety and well-being of our students make him the perfect choice for this role.”

Ross is a Wilmington native and played for the New Hanover High School Wildcats and the East Carolina Pirates before going to the NFL. He signed with the New Orleans Saints in 2010.

Then, he moved to the Green Bay Packers that same year and was on the team that won the Super Bowl Championship. Ross was with the Buffalo Bills when he retired from the NFL in 2013.

Ross moved back to Wilmington and joined the New Hanover County Sheriff’s office as a deputy. He moved up to Sergeant in a special ceremony. His grandmother, who he says has always been there for the big moments in his life, was by his side on Thursday. With this promotion, Ross will be a supervisor as a Sergeant for the School Resource Officer Unit.

“Jay understands the challenges our youth face today and has a unique ability to connect with them in a way that fosters trust and respect. His experience both on and off the field has shaped him into a leader who leads with compassion, discipline, and a deep commitment to serving our schools,” said Sheriff McMahon. “I have no doubt that under his leadership, our School Resource Officer program will continue to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the students, faculty, and parents we serve. Please join me in congratulating Sergeant Jay Ross on his well-earned promotion.”
