Pittsburgh Steelers Quarterback Kyle Allen (4) In game on Aug. 9, 2024. Kylee Surike | Special to PennLivePennLive
Pittsburgh Steelers third-string quarterback Kyle Allen is heading to the Detroit Lions on a one-year deal to join Jared Goff in the quarterback room. Allen threw just one pass in the regular season, and he was the true backup in eight games when injuries hit Russell Witlson and Justin Fields.
Allen will have the chance to compete for the backup quarterback job there. An eccentric personality, Allen is a quality locker room presence and brings many positives to any team’s quarterback room.
Allen has played for several teams before coming to the Steelers and is now heading to the Lions. He started his career as an undrafted free agent with the Carolina Panthers and, since that time, has played for the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, and Buffalo Bills.
Allen has had 26 touchdowns and 21 interceptions while throwing for over 4000 yards in his career. Pittsburgh signed Skylar Thompson immediately after the season ended, and he has a chance to get Allen’s third quarterback job this offseason against Mason Rudolph and a rookie.
