Former Florida Football Player Uses NFL Pro Day to Raise Funds for Rare Diseases

As former Florida Gators defensive lineman Joey Slackman prepares for his NFL Pro Day on March 27, he's turning the spotlight toward a cause close to his heart.

The former standout has pledged to use his performance at the event to raise money for Uplifting Athletes, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the rare disease community.

Fans and supporters can pledge donations for each bench press rep Slackman completes during the Pro Day, with a goal of 20 reps. The campaign aims to raise awareness and funds for the 30 million Americans affected by rare diseases, a mission that resonates deeply with the former Gator.

"During my time as a student-athlete at Florida, I realized the powerful platform athletes have to make a difference," Slackman said. "It's very important to me to take full advantage of this opportunity and turn it into something positive to help others."

Slackman, who transferred to Florida after a standout career at Penn, where he earned Second-Team AFCA All-America honors and was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year in 2023, has always balanced athletic excellence with academic achievement and community service. He graduated with a degree in political science and was a multiple-time academic honoree, including selections to the CSC Academic All-District Team and the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll.

Now, as he takes the next step toward his NFL dream, Slackman is determined to use his platform to give back. "I hope you will join me in making an impact on the lives of those affected by rare diseases," he said. "Together, we can make a difference."

There are many ways for players to raise awareness, and Slackman is using his NFL Pro Day for something special in a creative way.
