"Medical done": Geovany Quenda to join PL rivals instead of Manchester United - Fabrizio Romano

Manchester United have been handed their first setback for the summer with Chelsea reaching an agreement to sign one of their top targets.

The Red Devils are expected to make several signings during the next transfer window. A new right wing-back is reportedly on manager Ruben Amorim’s wishlist.

It was recently reported that United have ‘reserved‘ a move for Sporting CP wonderkid Geovany Quenda and they could sign him for around €60 million this summer.

However, there has been a major twist to the story over the last 24 hours. Fabrizio Romano reports that Chelsea have hijacked the deal after a ‘secret blitz‘.

There is already a club-to-club agreement and he has already undergone a medical with the Blues. The 17-year-old will join the Blues in the summer of 2026.

Amorim won’t be pleased after missing out on Quenda

The Portuguese wonderkid made his senior debut under Amorim at Sporting in August last year. He was brilliant from the right wing-back role for the Primeira Liga champions.

Since Amorim’s departure to Old Trafford, Quenda has also excelled from the left wing. The Blues have probably recruited him to bolster their attack for the 2026/27 season.

Quenda has 11 goal contributions in his breakthrough campaign, but he has also impressed with his defensive work rate and dribbling. He likes to contest for ground duels.

Amorim was determined to bring the youngster to Old Trafford in the summer. The Red Devils were planning talks for an advanced deal, but Chelsea have hijacked the move.

Missing out on the ‘very talented‘ star represents a big setback ahead of the next transfer window.

Amorim will be frustrated and it remains to be seen how United compensate for the unexpected transfer blow.
