Manchester City and Chelsea have the opportunity to land a significant windfall when they compete in the Club World Cup this summer.

The 32-team competition, which is set to take place in the US, will start on 15 June and end on 13 July.

FIFA has confirmed there will be a £780million prize pot for the Club World Cup, with the winner likely to earn around £78million.

The governing body has said it will also provide £155million in European solidarity payments for non-participating clubs.

Finance expert Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Man City and Chelsea will have a “big advantage” over some of their Premier League rivals due to the prize money on offer.

Man City currently sit fifth in the top-flight table, while Chelsea are fourth in the fight for Champions League football.

Man City and Chelsea could face problems after injury issue

Borson insisted there could be problems for the English clubs due to the amount of injuries there have been in the Premier League this season.

He told Football Insider: “It’s obviously a lot of money even for Premier League teams, but can you imagine the impact this has in some of the smaller divisions around the world?

“I think Auckland are in the tournament. I would think that the sort of participation money alone will be multiples of their entire revenue.

“For the European teams, if it’s going to be worth $100million (£78million), that is going to be worth fighting for. It’s a very significant amount of money.

“It’s akin to probably finishing in the quarter-finals or maybe the semi-finals for some teams in the Champions League.

“It’s a multiple of what you would get even winning the Europa League, so it’s very significant money on top of all of your other revenue streams. Only two English teams can get that money, so it’s a big advantage.

“I think what you’ve got is the division there between the football side and the financial side. The financial side is very interesting because it’s going to be transformational for some teams.

“It’s going to be very useful for others like City and Chelsea and pretty much all of the European teams. It’s not completely transformational, but it’s very useful.

“For some teams around the world, it’s going to be transformational, so you’re going to have the financial people saying this is amazing.

“And then the flip side of it is you’re going to have the footballing side going, this is really problematic because of a tournament that’s going to be spread across a number of weeks in the close season.

“They are going to be worried about the following season and the impact that it’s going to have, especially on the back of what we’ve seen, certainly at City and Arsenal this season with injuries.”
