Sweden boss Jon Dahl Tomasson has heaped praise on Lucas Bergvall after once again calling him up to the senior side for March's international break. Since making his international debut in January 2024 against Estonia, the Spurs ace has made a further three appearances for his country.
Bergvall will have the opportunity to add to his four caps later this month when Sweden take on Luxembourg and Northern Ireland in friendlies. Going on his outstanding form in Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham team since seeing his minutes really increase from early December, a first start for Sweden could be on the cards.
Bergvall has delivered some huge performances for Tottenham in recent months and it is something Tomasson has noted. The former Denmark international was also very impressed with the midfielder's second-half cameo against Bournemouth last weekend as he helped Spurs come from two goals down to register a point.
"[It is] incredible. It has been a tough season for Tottenham but he has had a very good year. He has taken very good steps," said Tomasson, as reported by Fotbollskanalen (via Sport Witness). "I like that he is very humble and wants to get better all the time.
"We all know that he scored an own goal against AZ, and that can happen to anyone. But the game after that he played 45 minutes and did very well. That says a lot about his mentality."
Tomasson has been in regular contact with Tottenham technical director and fellow countryman Johan Lange about Bergvall. During their conversations, the ex-Newcastle United striker was told something about the teenager and a comparison with a former Liverpool player.
"I've spoken to Tottenham too and they told me a story that I actually didn't know," revealed Tomasson. "That the last player to go from a league in Scandinavia straight to the Premier League and play this much in his debut season was Daniel Agger. Many years ago. That says a little about Lucas' performance as a very young player."
