From the lack of creativity evinced last time out with the stagnant midfield performance against Newcastle United, it is plain that [West Ham](https://www.claretandhugh.info/west-ham-manager-hits-back-on-massive-call/) need to bring creativity into their midfield this summer. Whoever is signed to add to the Hammers’ firepower up front, without link-up play and someone who can actually play a pass, the ‘_goals for’_ column is unlikely to change significantly. “_Hammers’ hoofball”_ has become a thing again. Disappointingly.
So bringing in a midfielder of the calibre of Angel Gomes, whilst alone is not the answer to West Ham’s troubles, would go a long way to upgrade the talent drought which currently sits in front of the back five. Soucek, Alvarez, Ward Prowse, Rodriguez and Carlos Soler provide zero in terms of creativity: Ward Prowse alone is possibly worth retaining.
For the summer, the main problem is of course that West Ham are not alone in seeking Gomes’ signature. Whilst the 24 year old England international is winding down his Lille contract, there are clamours from many Premier League clubs anxious to impress him, none more so than West Ham’s arch-rivals Tottenham.
In their article _‘Potter fears missing out on David and Gomes_‘, [givemesport.com](https://www.givemesport.com/west-ham-united-transfer-news-struggling-win-race-jonathan-david-angel-gomes-london-stadium/) believe:”_West Ham’s biggest challengers for Gomes’ services could prove to be arch-rivals Tottenham as the north Londoners have been holding lengthy conversations in a bid to persuade him to join Ange Postecoglou’s side when he embarks on a fresh challenge ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.”_
West Ham need to have contingency plans in place. Much has been written about duo Johnathan David and Angel Gomes: I suspect they will have better offers on the table than a struggling West Ham side. Whether Tottenham is the answer for either of them, frankly, is unlikely, considering the reported interest from top six sides and the lure of European Champions League football. Both West Ham and Spurs are more than likely to be given a wide berth by the duo.
