Bruno Fernandes was the hero as Man Utd defeated Real Sociedad in the Europa League last 16.

Bruno Fernandes has revealed he had an offer to leave Manchester United last summer before he ultimately opted to sign a new contract with the club. The 30-year-old further committed his future to United when he penned a new deal until 2027, with the option of an additional year.

Erik ten Hag was a key reason why Fernandes opted to remain at the club amid serious interest from Bayern Munich, though the decision looked like it might have backfired when the Dutchman was sacked just two months into the new campaign. There were questions over where he would fit into the system once compatriot Ruben Amorim took over as head coach, though the Portuguese playmaker remains as important as ever to United's success.

Fernandes netted a hat-trick as United booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night and his performances will be crucial as they look to win the competition and secure a place in the Champions League next season.

Bruno Fernandes had an offer to leave Manchester United

Speaking after his goal scoring heroics in the 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad, Bruno Fernandes revealed he had an offer to leave last summer and explained why he chose to remain at Old Trafford.

"I sat with the club because I had an offer to leave, we talked about the possibility of me leaving the club or staying. They said what they wanted from me. I just asked if they still see me as part of the future of the club or not. I spoke at the time with Ten Hag also. He was very clear with me, the club was very clear with me, that they thought I would be a big part of this rebuild that they want to do in a different way. I heard what they had to tell me. I thought that we could be successful. Unfortunately, we didn't start the season very well. Erik had to lose his job by the results we had and the performance we had, but the fault was on everyone and everyone together with the manager.

"Now we are in a different moment with a new manager that thinks in a different way, that has a different way of playing. I'm still very happy at the club, I'm being always happy at the club to play for this club, to represent the club is a big honour for me. It doesn't matter where we are in the league, it will always be an honour for me to be at this club and I will try my best to keep the club fighting for everything we can."
