According to The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, Newcastle defender Dan Burn is in line for a call-up to Thomas Tuchel’s first England squad for World Cup qualifiers.
Newcastle United will be in full swing of their preparations for the Carabao Cup final this weekend, as the dreams of silverware on Tyneside rest in the hands of Eddie Howe.
The North East giants are looking to end their trophy drought at Wembley Stadium, where they take on Premier League leaders Liverpool in a challenging clash that could go down in history for the club.
It hasn’t been an easy road to the final; losing Lewis Hall and Sven Botman to long-term injury issues has been a major blow to the defensive set-up, while Anthony Gordon’s three-game suspension has left the Magpies without one of their most important assets in the attacking threat.
However, after a 1-0 win over West Ham United on Monday night, there will be a boost of confidence in the available squad and a belief that there is an opportunity to take some long-overdue success from the clash on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle will get a break from the business end of their campaign following the outcome of their trip to London at the weekend, as World Cup qualifiers resume, which will see many of Howe’s squad take off for their international commitments.
The England squad is set to be announced today, and there is high anticipation surrounding the first-ever selection of new manager Thomas Tuchel.
Despite Lewis Hall being unavailable for selection, it is being reported that the former Chelsea boss has his eye on another Newcastle defender.
According to Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope, Dan Burn is set to earn his first-ever England call-up.
MailSport claim the Newcastle centre-back has already made the 55-man shortlist ahead of the fixtures against Albania and Latvia this month but is now poised to join the final squad at St George’s Park next week.
Will Dan Burn play for England?
There is no doubt that Burn has been a reliable and trusted member of Howe’s first-team squad since he returned to his native city to join his boyhood club back in January 2022 from Brighton and Hove Albion.
The 32-year-old – hailed as an “incredible signing” by the Newcastle manager – is a versatile left-footed defender capable of covering both the centre-back and left-back role with ease, which means his versatility could be extremely useful to Tuchel given the current injury to his teammate Hall.
The new England manager was in attendance for Newcastle’s victory over West Ham on Monday evening, so would’ve had a great chance to get a better idea of whether Burn is in his plans or not for the upcoming qualifiers.
It will be interesting to see if Burn will actually play for England in the fixtures against Albania and Latvia, but his potential to be called up next week is another testament to the progress Howe is making at Newcastle.
