Report: Thomas Tuchel’s reasoning for calling up Newcastle star Dan Burn to the England squad…

Reports have stated that Newcastle United defender Dan Burn will receive his first-ever England call-up on Friday.

After a torrid previous week for fans to endure, it feels as if the tide has changed in the last few days. A win on Monday, no new injuries to worry about, and a fatigued Liverpool squad going into a major final.

Now, it was revealed late on Thursday night that Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has been rewarded for his exceptional form this season by being named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad.

Fans of other clubs may see Burn’s inclusion as a surprise, but Newcastle fans know this has been a long time coming with the 32-year-old impressing throughout his three years at the Magpies.

It will no doubt give Burn a new air of confidence going into the Carabao Cup final where Newcastle are looking to end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. Sven Botman is injured for the final and has been missing since the beginning of February, Burn has been working overtime to keep Eddie Howe’s back line solid.

With the news now out that Burn will be playing under Thomas Tuchel later this month, a report has revealed exactly why the German wants the Blyth-born Toon star in his squad.

Why Thomas Tuchel is picking Dan Burn for England

While he doesn’t wear the armband, Burn is captain material for Newcastle. He wears his heart on his sleeve and will give every last ounce of energy to his club.

Burn’s form is even more impressive when one realises he is Newcastle’s only fit left-sided centre-back. Newcastle loaned Lloyd Kelly to Juventus in January, losing a useful squad player in the process.

However, Kelly’s exit means Burn has even more exposure to first-team football which he is sure to take in his stride.

According to the Daily Mail, Burn has wowed Tuchel with his versatility. The 32-year-old has mostly played as a centre-back this season but can also play at left-back, where he spent most of the season playing at Newcastle in the 2022/23 season.

The report states that Burn is a serious contender for a call-up after Tuchel watched him perform in Newcastle’s 1-0 win against West Ham on Monday.

The arrival of Lewis Hall moved Burn into the middle of defence but he could be shifted back over there if need be. Howe worked extra hours at Newcastle’s training ground last week after the devastating news that Hall is out for the rest of the season, one of the options he is sure to have considered is putting Burn up against Mohamed Salah.

Other Newcastle stars expecting England call-ups

The Magpies have several English players on their books, a few of which will definitely be in contention to be named in Tuchel’s first Three Lions squad.

Anthony Gordon has 11 goal involvements in the Premier League so far this campaign and has been regarded as one of the league’s best wingers.

He was sent off against Brighton in the FA Cup, meaning he will miss the Carabao Cup final, but that should not put Tuchel off.

Tino Livramento has enjoyed a fine season and like Burn, showed off his versatility to Tuchel on Monday night when he played as a left-back against West Ham, filling in for the absent Hall.

Nick Pope revealed Tuchel called him earlier in 2025 – a lack of quality English goalkeepers means that he will still be in contention for a spot.

All these players in consideration is a testament to the hard work Howe has put in over his three years, those same players can now repay him by winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday.
