**What should the Steelers do at quarterback if they don’t land Aaron Rodgers?**
It’s been a couple days now, and the Steelers are waiting on Aaron Rodgers. They have an offer on the table for him, but at least the Giants are also pursuing him. We have also heard the Vikings may throw their hat in the ring, and who knows how the situation might change.
Instead of waiting for Rodgers, the Steelers did make a move at quarterback. They brought back a familiar face, Mason Rudolph, signing him to a two-year, $8 million contract. While he is returning in the guise of a backup, they probably feel about as good about him as they did about Mitch Trubisky, quite frankly, at least by the time they benched him the first time.
Some believe that Aaron Rodgers is exercising a power trip, holding all the cards as teams wait for him to make a decision. Perhaps the Steelers are among those starting to feel that way, with arguably the most to lose. While they still needed a backup, would they have gone for Rudolph if they had heard back from their target?
The Steelers’ Plan B if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t sign with them, presumably, would be Russell Wilson. But Wilson is now taking visits with other teams, namely the Giants and Browns. It’s highly plausible that either one would sign him, which would be rather a problem if Rodgers decides not to join the Steelers.
So what do they do in the event that he chooses another path? What then, especially, if Russell Wilson has already signed with another team? What options do the Steelers even have if Rodgers spurns them to play for another team?
One option, obviously, is to do nothing, and to view Mason Rudolph as a starter. Of course, in that case, they would still need to sign another backup—apologies to Skylar Thompson. I’m sure many Steelers fans would like to see that, probably more than those who want Rodgers. At least, that certainly seems to be the case among those who are vocal on the internet.
_The Steelers’ 2024 season has come to its predictably inauspicious end, with yet another one-and-done postseason for HC Mike Tomlin. The offense faltered, and the defense matched it blow for blow, leading to a 21-0 first-half deficit._
_Just like last year, the biggest question hanging over the Steelers is the quarterback question. Do they_ [_still believe in Russell Wilson, and/or Justin Fields_](https://steelersdepot.com/2025/01/breer-steelers-will-mull-qb-future-playoff-loss-does-not-help-russell-wilsons-case/)_, or do they want another solution? There are_ [_other major decisions to make_](https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/pittsburgh-steelers)_, as well, such as what to do with George Pickens. Do you sign him to an extension, try to trade him, or let him play out his rookie contract?_
_The Steelers started the 2024 season 10-3, with Mike Tomlin in the Coach of the Year conversation. Wash, rinse, and repeat, and we have another late-season collapse. This may be the worst yet, a four-game losing streak presaging a one-and-done playoff “run”. Welcome to Steelers football._
