Pochettino refuses to rule out Tottenham return despite Chelsea spell

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed he would love to return to Tottenham in the future. The Argentine spent over five years in charge at Spurs before he departed the club in November 2019.

Pochettino was appointed in May 2014 after a successful spell at Southampton and guided Tottenham to the League Cup final in his first season. Pochettino's maiden Premier League campaign was successful, guiding them to a fifth-place finish and integrating several academy players into first-team superstars.

Tottenham were in contention to win the top flight in Pochettino's second season, but they were beaten by Leicester City and ended up finishing third with Arsenal overtaking them.

Spurs went one better in the 2016/17 season, finishing second - their highest finish since 1963 - though it wasn't enough for them to win the title as Chelsea were crowned champions.

Pochettino continued to build his Spurs team as they transitioned from White Hart Lane to Wembley and then to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Although there were inconsistencies, Pochettino established them as a Champions League club, and they reached the final of that competition in 2018/19.

But Tottenham couldn't get over the line and lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the Champions League final. That felt like Pochettino's last major achievement in the Spurs dugout before he was fired.

Following his exit from Tottenham, Pochettino went and managed Paris Saint-Germain before returning to London and making the controversial move to Chelsea in May 2023. He spent one season at Stamford Bridge, finishing sixth, before he was axed following the end of the campaign.

Pochettino has since dipped into international management with the United States and has so far won five of his six matches in charge. Although Pochettino is pleased in his current role in the US, he has not ruled out the possibility of returning to Tottenham in the future, as it's a "dream" for him.

Speaking to talkSPORT about making a return to Tottenham, with Ange Postecoglou having come under increasing pressure in recent weeks, Pochettino said: "To be honest, the day that I left the club always I was thinking one day to come back. It's not that I was thinking before the offer from the USA national team, I was thinking to come back.

"The day that I left I was thinking I would love to one day come back to Tottenham because like I told in the past, I said for me, I felt empty in the moment that I left. It was like an unfinished job and that is why. It's a feeling, it's a feeling, it's a dream.

"I don't know how you can take or I can explain or describe but I think for sure it's a club that is always going to be special for me. And I would like to one day to have the possibility again to try to arrive in a situation that we are back to finish in a different way."
