Championship Goal of the Month for February: Stoke City ace immediately knew he had 'hit a good one'

You don’t have to watch the Premier League to see the best goals each month, with plenty of top strikes hitting the back of the net in the EFL week in, week out.

From the Championship down to League Two, there’s always great entertainment to be had in the Football League.

This season, we’ve seen teams battling for promotion and fighting for survival in their respective divisions, but what we love to see most of all are stunning goals.

We recently learned Leeds United’s Daniel Farke and Dan James won the monthly awards for Manager and Player of the Month in February, and now, the Goal of the Month award has been announced.

Lewis Baker scoops Goal of the Month award for February

The winner of the award for February in the Championship is Stoke City’s Lewis Baker, who struck from inside his own half against Swansea City on February 15th.

The midfielder lobbed Lawrence Vigouroux with a clever hit with the outside of his boot, no less, in a marvellous show of technical ability.

Speaking to Sky after receiving the prize, Baker said: “I managed to intercept the ball, take a touch out of my feet, and look up in time to spot that the keeper was pretty far out. I thought I’d just go for it, to be fair.

“You know when you’ve hit a good one, you just hope it ends up in the back of the net. I definitely think it’s up there with the best goals I’ve scored. It was a decent strike.”

Baker took the award at the expense of Watford’s Imran Louza, Bristol City’s Mark Sykes, and Coventry City’s Brandon Thomas-Asante.

League One and League Two Goal of the Month revealed

In League One, Crawley Town’s Bradley Ibrahim scooped the award for his effort versus Wrexham on February 1st.

Ibrahim brought the ball down on his chest before thumping one from 30 yards to level the scores in the 90th minute. Sadly, Crawley hearts were broken five minutes later when Elliot Lee headed home to snatch the win for the Red Dragons.

Bradley said: “I am delighted to have won the goal of the month award, it was a great strike and one that I am very proud of.

“Unfortunately, we were not able to get anything from the game in the end, but we are now looking forward and hoping to have a positive end to the season.”

Down in League Two, David McGoldrick’s delightful lob for Notts County against Gillingham on February 1st won the prize.

McGoldrick said: “The ball broke into space, and I managed to get there quickly enough to take the defender out the game. The keeper came off his line and it was an instinctive decision to chip it over him. I got a great connection and knew it was going in straightaway. It’s definitely one I’ll always remember.”
