Trent Alexander-Arnold is facing an extended spell on the sidelines with the ankle injury that has ruled him out of Liverpool's League Cup final against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Alexander-Arnold will miss the Wembley showdown for the second successive season after sustaining the problem during the Champions League round of 16 second leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday at Anfield.

Liverpool are still waiting to ascertain the extent of the damage amid initial fears he could miss much of the Premier League title run-in, with Slot's side 15 points clear of Arsenal with nine games remaining.

And while Reds boss Arne Slot is confident Alexander-Arnold will feature again this campaign, Liverpool are now braced to be without the vice-captain for a significant period.

"Trent is not available," said Slot, speaking on Friday morning. "He will not be there at the final but he is still to be assessed.

"We do expect him back by the end of the season."

With Liverpool also without Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, it means Jarell Quansah - who replaced Alexander-Arnold on Tuesday - is now favourite to start at right-back against Newcastle.

Slot, though, has played down fears Ibrahima Konate may be unavailable after the France international centre-back limped off against PSG during extra time with suspected cramp.

"We didn't train yesterday and had a warmdown session on Wednesday, so we haven't trained yet," said the Liverpool boss. "But I expect Ibou to train today."
