The updated depth chart
The numbers that appear beside some players’ names are 2025 cap hits per Over the Cap. I have not included cap hits below $1.5m.
The Commanders currently have 30 defensive players, 36 offensive players and 3 special teams players.
Please note that assigned positions and color coding are my own personal opinions. They do not necessarily represent the thinking of Washington’s coaches or front office, nor are they necessarily consistent with fan consensus. This chart represents my personal interpretation, and may not reflect the thoughts of other writers on Hogs Haven. Finally, when it comes to backup players, I don’t put much effort into making sure that they are on the right or left or behind the specific player that they backup. I mostly just try to fit everyone on the chart efficiently.
Free agency is not over by any means, though the pace of signings and extensions should slow down very quickly at this point. The Commanders still need to add another 21 players to the offseason roster, and currently holds only 5 picks in April’s draft.
That means that Adam Peters is still looking to add up quite a few veterans, draft picks and college undrafted free agents over the coming weeks.
With 69 players, the Commanders have about the number of players that will comprise the 53-man roster and 16-man practice squad in 2025. It’s starting to become clearer where Adam Peters needs to concentrate his efforts moving forward. The roster looks thin at DE and a bit undermanned at OL, with opportunities to upgrade at most other positions outside of quarterback.
The team may be able to add one more ‘impact’ player in free agency, but, at this point, the real “upside” for this roster is likely to come via an additional trade or through the draft, and especially in the first four rounds where the Commanders currently have only 3 picks.
The number of extensions and external signings is likely to slow considerably from this point on as opportunities for unrestricted free agents and cap space become scarce. It seems likely that the Commanders will bring in 8-12 undrafted college free agents in addition to their 5 drafted rookies to fill out the 90-man roster by July. So, I don’t expect more than a small handful of free agent signings or extensions between now and the April draft.
