Leicester City may not have any players in Thomas Tuchel’s maiden England senior squad, but they will have three of their young stars representing the country over the international break.
Both Will Alves and Ben Nelson have been selected for the Elite League squad (formerly Under-20s) as they play two matches from next week.
First up, they travel to Portugal for the latest fixture in the Euro Elite League on Friday, 21 March, and then they hop over the border into Spain for a friendly against Switzerland on Monday, 24 March.
The camp will be beneficial for both City players after their recent returns from injuries, but especially Nelson.
The centre-back was out for four months following surgery on a thigh muscle but was back in action in midweek, coming on as a substitute for loan club Oxford in their 2-1 defeat to Hull.
Both players are in the Championship relegation battle, with Oxford in 20th and Alves’s Cardiff in 21st, just one point and one place outside the drop zone.
Joining them in the Elite League squad is their former City team-mate Trey Nyoni. The attacking midfielder was poached by Liverpool from City’s academy just over 18 months ago and the 17-year-old has already played six senior matches for the Reds.
The third City player to receive a call-up is central midfielder Louis Page, who is once again in the England Under-17s squad.
It’s a big month for the Under-17s. They face three matches in seven days at St George’s Park against Israel, Slovenia and Northern Ireland, hoping to finish on top of a four-team group.
If they do so, they will not only qualify for the Under-17s Euros in Albania in May, but book their ticket to the Under-17s World Cup in Qatar in November.
Page is one of the most exciting prospects coming through at City. Alongside Jake Evans and Jeremy Monga, he won the the Under-16s Premier League Cup with City last season and has been fast-tracked to the Under-21s, where he’s now a regular in Leon McSweeney’s midfield.
