A "fanatical" Liverpool fan "cried tears of joy" when he found out he had won tickets to the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle on Sunday (March 16). Heath McCalmon, 12, has never been to a Liverpool match, but his luck changed when his mum entered a competition on a whim.
Heath, who has autism, "danced round the room" after his mum, Clare, received a phone call to inform her of the good news. Clare won the VIP tickets after entering a competition on SeatPick. Speaking to the ECHO, she said: "It just came up on my phone. I don't normally do competitions but I thought I'd give it a go. I wasn't expecting to win at all.
"When I told [Heath] he cried tears of joy. He just couldn't believe it, he was so overwhelmed. When it sunk in a little bit he was dancing round the room. He was very emotional.
"To win those tickets, it was just amazing because I would never have been able to afford a big match like that. To give him those memories - I just can't express how special that is. I know how much he will absolutely love it. He'll be in awe of it all, the whole experience. I'm just really, really pleased."
Clare's partner, Alvin Kofi, from Old Swan, described how Clare had bought tickets to see Liverpool's New Year's Day game against Newcastle. He said she had paid a "colossal" amount of money for the tickets, but it turned out to be a scam.
Alvin said: "The irony of it is, at Christmas his mum bought him tickets to see the New Year's game against Newcastle. They were blag tickets but they didn't know that at the time.
"It was getting closer and closer to Christmas and they still didn't have their tickets. And then a few days before the match, the website went down. End of, she lost the money. So the fact that he's won this now, he's absolutely made up.
"I've never ever seen anyone so excited about Liverpool Football Club. When he comes over to this house, he's got a Liverpool top on, he goes to school in his Liverpool top, he's got a Mo Salah teddy bear. He's fanatical about football."
Despite securing tickets to the final, the pair are struggling to find transport to get from Liverpool to Wembley Stadium. Alvin said: "They've got tickets to go down but they just need a lift down there now. And I know the Liverpool fans will take care of him. I know if he ends up going on a coach they'll be made up with him."
