Liverpool have been dealt a major blow ahead of Sunday's Carabao Cup final, with Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled out due to injury. The 26 year old right-back sustained an ankle injury during Tuesday night's Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, sparking fears of a serious issue.
While he is expected to return this season, he will not feature in the weekend's final against Newcastle. Manager Arne Slot confirmed the news on Friday, suggesting Curtis Jones could fill in at right-back.
Alexander-Arnold was notably absent from Thomas Tuchel's first England squad, announced earlier on Friday, due to his injury. His absence will be keenly felt, given his recent impressive performances for England under interim manager Lee Carsley.
It remains unclear who will replace Alexander-Arnold at Wembley on Sunday, but Slot praised Jarell Quansah, who stepped in at right-back midweek and made Tuchel's first England squad.
The manager praised his player, saying: "It says a lot about his mentality [England call].I changed him v Ipswich and Virgil and Ibou [Konate] are such a strong combination, so every time he plays everyone can see he is a talent.
"He has had some setbacks and he has reacted and shown in recent performances, he has outgrown being called just a talent so that is what Tuchel has seen."
"He has done well for us in a position he is not used to, at right-back. He is strong, fast and comfortable on the ball. And he gives us something different on set-pieces too, you saw where he hit the post."
