Troubling Jacksonville Jaguars rumors on pursuit of top player in NFL free agency

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been relatively quiet in NFL free agency this offseason, only making a few moderate additions to the roster for the 2025 season. However, recent NFL rumors have suggested that the club was in the mix to help quarterback Trevor Lawrence with a big free-agent signing.

Under first-year Jaguars general manager James Gladstone, the club has focused on improving in the trenches and defensively. To improve the offensive line, Jacksonville signed Chuma Edoga, Robert Hainsey and Patrick Mekari to set up what should be a better line next season.

To improve defensively, Jacksonville signed nickel Jourdan Lewis and there have been frequent reports suggesting the fifth overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft will be used on the best defensive player available. However, Lawrence does need more reliable pass-catchers and reports surfaced this week that the Jaguars were interested in signing Cooper Kupp.

However, according to Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Jaguars “are not in on” Kupp despite previous reporting suggesting he is a target. The former All-Pro wide receiver is expected to sign by the end of the weekend, but it won’t be with Jacksonville.

Kupp had ties to the Jaguars that seemingly made him a potential option. For one thing, Gladstone worked with the Los Angeles Rams when they drafted Kupp and saw his progress throughout his time with the team. Kupp also would’ve perfectly filled the slot role that Jaguars head coach Liam Coen has used both Kupp and Chris Godwin highly effectively during stints with the Rams and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While Jacksonville did trade Christian Kirk this offseason, it also signed wide receiver Dyami Brown and it will likely draft another pass-catcher on Day 2 of the 2025 NFL Draft. As for Kupp, he’s deciding between five teams with a decision reportedly imminent.
