Marcus Rashford left Manchester United for Aston Villa during the January transfer window.

Manchester United fans are adamant that Ruben Amorim aimed a dig at Marcus Rashford before the Red Devils' win over Real Sociedad.

On Thursday night, United secured their place in the last eight of the Europa League after beating La Liga side Sociedad at Old Trafford.

Skipper Bruno Fernandes netted a hat-trick before Diogo Dalot's goal sealed a 4-1 victory on the night (United won 5-2 on aggregate). Mikel Oyarzabal was the scorer for the visitors.

The Red Devils will next face French side Lyon in the last eight of the competition.

Ahead of the match against Sociedad, eyebrows were slightly raised after Amorim named young defender Ayden Heaven in his starting XI. The 18-year-old only joined the club in January but impressed during a cameo against former club Arsenal last weekend.

Explaning why he picked Heaven, Amorim said: "Ayden Heaven starts because when you prove yourself in training and in matches, you are an option to play.

"He is doing very well and we are excited to see him."

Did Ruben Amorim aim a fresh dig at Marcus Rashford?

Reacting to Amorim's comments, United fans were convinced that the Portuguese aimed a dig at Rashford, who left Old Trafford to join Aston Villa on loan in January after falling out of favour.

On social media, one fan said: "Still sending the shots at Rashford. I rate it."

Another tweeted: "Is he taking shots at a certain someone?"

A third fan added: "Marcus was flushed because he didn't prove himself. I hope we're getting it."

Someone else wrote: "Marcus knows this very well."

Reflecting on his team's recent results, Amorim added: "The performance was really good. I think the response has been great, it was a good week. We show a little bit of the future.

"We talk about the problems of the present and give a good exhibition to our fans to complete the week. We are learning about us, about different competitions, how to win games. Sometimes how to draw games, to win some points. So, it was a tough week, but a good week."

United are back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on Leicester City on Sunday night.
