Windows 11 Update Causes Printers to Output Random Text

A recent Windows 11 update has caused some USB-connected printers to print random text instead of the intended documents. The issue starts from the KB5050092 preview update, which began rolling out on January 29. Microsoft says that affected printers may unexpectedly produce programming-related text, including network commands and unusual characters, as reported by PCWorld.

In some instances, the printed output may include terms like "POST /ipp/print HTTP/1.1" and headers related to the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP). Microsoft explains that this problem often occurs when the printer is powered on or reconnected after being disconnected.

The problem comes from a clash between the updated printer drivers and the print spooler. The print spooler sends IPP messages to the printer, which causes it to print the wrong text.

The issue impacts users running Windows 11 versions 23H2 and 22H2, as well as Windows 10 version 22H2, but does not affect the latest Windows 11 version 24H2. Microsoft is working on a fix that will be included in a future update.

As a temporary solution, Microsoft advises IT administrators to use the Known Issue Rollback (KIR) tool to revert affected systems to a previous state. This tool can turn off the changes that are causing the printing problem. You can download it from Microsoft's support page.

Users are advised to avoid installing the KB5050092 update if possible or use the rollback tool until a permanent fix is released.
