Leeds United's Raphinha clause mapped out amid Champions League, Ballon D'Or shouts

Leeds United sold Raphinha to Barcelona back in the summer of 2022 for a reported £55million, and the Brazilian is looking more likely than ever for the Champions League title and potentially the Ballon D’Or too.

It’s becoming a weekly occurrence on social media to see Leeds fans perplexed that someone of Raphinha’s quality was ever at the club.

While the same comments might grow tiresome, the Brazilian’s performances right now are something to marvel at, and the Whites have a vested interest in his form continuing in Europe.

Having put Leeds on his back in the 21/22 season and dragging them to safety on the final day, Raphinha earned a dream move to Barcelona in which no fan would begrudge him.

The fee at the time was reported at £55million in total from the Catalan giants to Leeds in 2022, a small portion of that that being add-ons, with various outlets sharing contrasting numbers on how much Leeds are potentially in line for as bonuses.

There were previous claims in October 2024 that Barcelona owed Leeds a significant portion of the fee, but that is not the case, with the La Liga side more likely to have borrowed money to pay the Whites on time, and now in debt to the respective creditors.

Barcelona have notably struggled to register high-profile signings due to La Liga’s enforced spending rules and the club’s inability to fully comply with FFP.

Do Leeds have a Champions League clause in Raphinha’s Barcelona contract?

Raphinha’s Barcelona are flying in the Champions League right now, through to the quarter-finals courtesy of three goals across two legs against Benfica, scoring twice in the return leg at the Estadi Olimpic as Lamine Yamal scored the other with a stunner, inadvertently assisted by Raphinha.

With Liverpool knocked out, Barcelona are likely to be seen as one of the standout favourites for the trophy, which is very good news for Leeds.

According to Marca at the time of his deal going through in Spain, it was claimed that Leeds had around £10million waiting for them in add-ons, in case the winger lifts the Champions League trophy while in Barcelona colours.

Other outlets claim that Leeds could only be in line for as much as £5million in performance-related add-ons such as the Champions League clause, but even then, that nearly gets you two Ao Tanakas.

As Barcelona shine in the Champions League, with Raphinha’s output exploding this season to world class levels, shouts for the Ballon D’Or are inevitable.

Mohamed Salah is producing absurd levels at Liverpool, but the Champions League winners’ medal could help tip the vote in Raphinha’s favour, should he be victorious – while Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior won’t be far off recognition either.

However, there is nothing to suggest that Leeds also included a clause in Raphinha’s contract to trigger more payments if he is crowned the world’s best player during his time at the Camp Nou.
