Ruben Amorim has told Roy Keane to lay off Manchester United’s talismanic skipper Bruno Fernandes.

Keane accused Fernandes of being a “f*****g impostor” because he is lapping up praise from the fans when United are enduring their worst league campaign in 35 years. Amorim has huge respect for Keane and understands he captained United during one of their most-glorious phases under Sir Alex Ferguson.

But he says not everything is “black and white” and claims he could not do without United’s latest incarnation of Captain Marvel, who has amassed 15 goals and 12 assists after his hat-trick against Real Sociedad. “I think he’s so important, so important for this team and you can see that from the numbers and you can see that from his last games, he’s always the guy that scores,” said the United manager.

“That’s not the only thing, but he’s always there. When you play for this team, you have to be prepared for the critics. And I understand that former players had a lot of success here and the standards for them were so high.

“They see things like that in black and white and life sometimes is not just black and white, there are some other colours and you have to understand the context. Again, he’s always there, trying his best and I’m really proud to coach a player like him.”

Fernandes was very diplomatic when responding to Keane’s stinging criticism after his hat-trick in the Europa League set up a quarter-final with Lyon next month. The Portugal star says he will try to change Keane’s opinion of him through his performances.

“Everyone has an opinion and that’s fine,” said Fernandes. “Roy Keane was an amazing captain for the club, one of the best as everyone says. He’s massively respected by everyone and has all my respect. He has to give his opinion in a programme and this is what he thinks about me.

“What I’m doing on the pitch is trying to change his mind, or trying to do something he probably sees as a good thing. Obviously, I do it in my own way, I don’t want to copy anyone.

“I try to be the best captain that I can be for my team-mates. I try to help everyone in the best way I can and the best way I know. Criticism is always going to be there and it’s going to make me grow and understand that there’s still a long way to go.”
