Myles Herro, the little brother of Miami Heat point guard Tyler Herro, caused a high school basketball handshake line to devolve into chaos during the Wisconsin state playoffs on Thursday. He sparked a skirmish between Whitnall and Waterford after a loss in the Sectional Semifinal.

It is unclear as to what caused him to lose his temper, other than the result.

Herro, a senior, has two scholarship offers from Western Illinois and Cal Poly. Creighton, Dayton, Rice, St. Louis, UW-Green Bay, UW-Milwaukee, Wyoming and Washington State also showed interest. However, even though he averages more than 20 points per game and shows D-I potential, those schools may think twice after this latest incident.

Waterford defeated Whitnall by a score of 56-49 in a neutral-site high school basketball game played at Wilmot Union. The Wolverines will advance to the Sectional Final. The Falcons had their season come to an end.

As is standard, both schools met at half court to shake hands after the final buzzer. Things were cordial until Herro reached Caden Gustafson. For reasons unknown, Whitnall’s star guard extended his neck to chirp at Waterford’s star guard from a few feet away. He shoved him off-balance when they finally came face-to-face.

A scuffle ensued between the two teams. Officials, coaches, staffers and even some fans very quickly stepped in to break things up. Here’s another look at the incident and subsequent aftermath:

Myles Herro was singularly responsible for the skirmish as the instigator. He also had to be restrained by his teammates while continuing to yap at Gustafson.

Neither side has issued a statement about what happened so we do not yet know the full story. I would venture to guess that Herro was upset with the career-ending loss, in which Gustafson played well, and did not respond well to some minor trash talk during the game. Regardless of what happened, Gustafson and Whitnall will continue to play high school basketball this season. Herro and Waterford will not.
