Darius Slay addresses previous fights with new Steelers teammates: ‘It’s just football'

PITTSBURGH --Darius Slay joins the Pittsburgh Steelers as one of the star additions they made this offseason. Coming into Pittsburgh, Slay should be one of the best veteran mentors they could have, especially for players like Joey Porter Jr.

However, Slay got into it a few times on the field with some of his new teammates. One of those key new teammates he ended up scrapping with on the field? DK Metcalf. But Slay does not anticipate that being an issue.

“It’ll be a great challenge, and like I said, I’m always here to help them get better. I’m one of the ones you ask about any DB, about their game, I can tell you what their weakness is, or their strength is because that’s how much tape I watch of DBs.Yeah, it could be fun. I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be competitive. I got into it with DK before, so it’s going to be fun in a good way. But we’re going to get after it," Slay said.

In December, Slay was blocked into a retaining wall by Steelers tight end Darnell Washington. That started a dust-up between Slay along with Washingon and Calvin Austin III. But he anticipates that should be smoothed over rather easily.

“I’m mostly an easygoing dude, so it’s going to be smooth. It’s just going to be a smooth transition. It’s just football. It’s just a competitive sport. But we’re teammates now, so hey, we’re going to jump on other folks,” Slay said.

Slay has one, maybe two years left in him at 34 years old. The Steelers, after their immediate moves on Sunday and Monday, seem to believe they are in a win-now mode and are going all-in. Slay fits that window while also not shutting off the path for seventh-round pick Cory Trice, 24, to improve and become the answer.
