Ruben Amorim provides injury update on Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo, required star could return to bench vs Leicester City

Manchester United face relegation contenders Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday night.

Fresh off the back of Manchester United’s 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League, Ruben Amorim will aim to take momentum into the league meeting against Leicester City.

The Foxes, now managed by former United striker and coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, are in the middle of a relegation dogfight.

Leicester sit 19th in the table, six points below Wolves in 17th, and that could become a bigger climb by the time kick-off comes around on Sunday. They have lost each of their last five matches in the Premier League without scoring a single goal.

It’s a chance for United to get back-to-back wins on the board in a season that has lacked consistency.

Amorim provided a positive update on Mason Mount, who has not been seen in United’s first-team since mid-December, when he suffered an injury in the first half of our derby victory over Manchester City.

It was the latest of many setbacks Mount has suffered since signing from Chelsea in a £60m deal back in 2023.

Amorim also provided an update on Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.

“With different competitions we have to rotate because we are risking a little bit some players,” Amorim told reporters.

“For example, Casemiro was so tired, we didn’t want to risk Ugarte because today was a decision in one competition and Ugarte wanted to stay here.

“I think we have Mason Mount, he’s going to return really, really slow. Kobbie, maybe he will return in a few weeks, I don’t know for sure. Harry Maguire, we’ll try not to risk, we’ll see for Sunday. We need all the players.

“Again, I think against Lyon it’s going to be a different kind of game. The physicality, they have the same physicality, it’s going to be a different game, more demanding in that aspect and we have a lot of difficult games in Premier League.”

That than given a precise date on Mainoo’s return, Amorim kept his cards close to his chest, while stating they are not in a position to take risks with Maguire.

Mount ready to return vs Leicester City

It has been three months since Mount last played for United, but the England international is expected to play a key role in the squad once he is match fit.

Amorim expressed his “love” for the midfielder who he considers a required player in his preferred system.

He also confirmed that Mount should be ready to be named on the bench against Leicester this weekend: “I already said that I really love Mason Mount. Because I see him, I know how he suffers, I know he does everything right. He eats right, his physical aspect is perfect. He’s trying too much.

“Maybe he’s thinking too much about everything. He was a European champion. He’s a really talented player. And when the player does everything like he does, he will always have the support of everybody here in the club.

“So we will try to manage the load. And you already saw some players that had a lot of problems during one time. In some moments he can stay fit and I believe a lot on Mason Mount.

“And we need players like Mason Mount.

“I think he’s going to the bench. We’ll see. But we need every player. And if he’s fit, I’m going to take him. He cannot play too many minutes, but just five minutes of Mason Mount is perfect.”

It suggests the best of United this season may come at the end of the season, if Mount can stay fit.
