Report: Kansas City Chiefs sign backup quarterback

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KCTV/KY3) - Patrick Mahomes has a new backup quarterback.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs and Gardner Minshew reached an agreement on a one-year deal. Minshew, a 28-year-old who has started 42 career games in a six-year NFL career, joins the Chiefs following a season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Minshew started nine games for the Raiders in 2024 and threw for 2,013 yards, 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He dealt with injuries during his season in Las Vegas, suffering a fractured collarbone in a Week 12 loss to the Denver Broncos that ended his season.

The Washington State product has played with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Raiders during his NFL career. He was part of the Eagles team that lost to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.

In 59 career games, Minshew has 11,950 passing yards, 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Minshew becomes the third different Chiefs backup quarterback in as many seasons. Last season, the Chiefs employed Carson Wentz in the backup position. In each of the last two seasons, Kansas City has started its backup quarterback in Week 18.
